Understanding EV charging is important - but knowing the different types of EV charging connectors is just as essential. Understanding the connector type will help you to choose the right charger for your EV.

Different EVs use different charging standards; that means EV charging connectors totally depend on your vehicle type, location, charging methods, and the type of charger you are using. EV charging connectors come in different sizes, shapes, and power levels. Only picking the right one enables fast charging.

This guide will help you to understand the different types of EV connectors and also help to determine which connector would be suitable for home use or commercial use.

What are EV Charging Connectors?

An EV charging connector is the plug that connects an electric vehicle to a charging station or a charging cable.

Think of it as a link between your EV and power source. There isn't one universal connector used by every electric vehicle. Connector types vary depending on the vehicle manufacturer, country, charging standard, and whether the vehicle uses AC or DC charging. And connectors will decide how fast you can charge your EV because some connectors support slow AC charging and some others hold ultra fast DC charging.

AC vs. DC Charging

Understanding the difference between AC and DC charging is important before delving deeper into the concept of EV charging connectors.

AC charging: The vehicle receives electricity as AC; the EV’s onboard charger converts it into DC so the battery can store it.

  • It is most common at homes, offices, and malls.
  • It internally converts AC to DC power before it reaches the battery.
  • It is convenient for overnight charging and is also suitable for long-term parking.

DC charging: The conversion of AC into DC happens inside the power station. DC power is directly delivered to the vehicle’s battery.

  • The charger converts AC power to DC power before it reaches the battery.
  • It is good for long routes.
  • It needs a connector.

Some Common EV Charging Connector Types

Here are some main types of EV charging connectors.

Type 1 Connector - SAE J1772

The Type1 connector is known as SAE J1772 or the J-plug, and is mainly used in North America and Japan. It is a five-pin connector, and it supports only single-phase AC charging. It is commonly associated with Level 1 and Level 2 charging. Power usage is also limited to 7.2 kW.

Type 2 connector (Mennekes)

The Type 2 connector is one of the most important standards to understand. Type 2 is also known as the Mennekes connector and is widely used in the UAE and Europe. Unlike Type 1, Type 2 is a seven-pin connector and supports both single-phase and three-phase AC charging. It can provide up to 22 kW of power in both phases.

Finding the right connector for your EV can be a challenge, but Blaupunkt EV makes it simple. We offer charging cables with various connector combinations, like Type 2 to Type 2 and Type 2 to Type 1, allowing you to easily match the cable to both your car and the charging point.

When it comes to charging, you have the option to choose between single-phase and three-phase, which basically determines how quickly you can charge your device. The cables are designed to withstand daily use and are also weatherproof, making them perfect for the UAE's harsh climate, with its intense heat and dust.

CCS Type 1- Combined Charging System

CCS Type 1 is a Type 1 with two additional DC charging pins. This allows the one charging port to support both AC and DC fast charging. Like Type 1, it is mostly used in North America.

So, we can say that Type 1 and CCS Type 1 are related, but they are not the same connector. Type 1 is primarily for AC charging, while CCS Type 1 adds the additional pins required for DC fast charging.

CCS Type 2- The DC Fast Charging

CCS Type 2 is commonly known as CCS Combo 2, combining the Type 2 connector with 2 DC charging pins. This design lets you charge with AC and DC through a single port. You do not need two separate sockets on the car.

It is widely used for its DC fast charging standards in the UAE. This makes CCS Type 2 particularly important when you are looking at fast EV charging rather than regular home AC charging

CHAdeMO connector

CHAdeMO is a DC fast charging connector developed by Japanese automakers. It supports bidirectional charging, which allows power to flow both ways. It only supports DC fast charging; it cannot handle AC charging.

CHAdeMO helped pave the way for fast EV charging. Its bidirectional feature is still one of its strongest advantages.

While newer cars are moving to CCS2, millions of CHAdeMO vehicles are still on the road. Knowing your connector helps you charge faster and avoid compatibility issues.

GB/T connectors

GB/T is China's national charging standard. Unlike CCS, GB/T does not combine AC and DC into one port. It uses two different connectors. The GB/T AC connector supports AC charging at home, offices, and public AC stations, and the DC connector supports fast charging. So, while a GB/T connector may look somewhat similar to other EV plugs, compatibility should never be assumed based on appearance alone.

Which Charging Connector is used most in the UAE?

Most people in the UAE usually use only two types of connectors:

  • Type 2 for AC charging
  • CCS2 for DC fast charging

Most electric vehicles sold nowadays have a special port called CCS2. This one port can be used for two types of plugs: the Type 2 AC plug and the CCS2 DC plug. It's pretty handy to have just one port that can do both jobs.

You'll still come across CHAdeMO charging points at some older stations, mostly for cars made in Japan. However, these days, Type 2 and CCS2 are the ones that most drivers use.

Conclusion

Choosing the right EV charging connector is essential for compatibility, charging speed, and convenience. If you are charging your EV at home in the UAE, Type2 is generally the connector standard you will encounter for AC charging. For fast charging, CCS2 is the connector.

The EV connector Type2 handles everyday AC charging. It is perfect for overnight charging or long parking at work. CCS2 handles fast charging, ideal for quick top-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions

A CCS2 port accepts a standard Type 2 AC plug. So you can use a Type 2 charger for AC charging and CCS2 chargers for DC fast charging.
Although the GB/T EV charging standard is not originally compatible with infrastructure in the UAE, as they use Type 2 (AC) and CCS2 (DC), these standards can still be employed through the use of appropriate adapters or special equipment.
Adapters exist for some connector pairs, such as Type 1 to Type 2. But they depend on your car and the power level, and DC adapters are rare. Always check compatibility with your vehicle's manufacturer first.
