EV Potential in Cameroon

Cameroon’s EV Infrastructure: Building the Foundation for a Greener Mobility Future

Cameroon is entering an important new phase in its energy and transport transformation. As urbanisation accelerates and demand for mobility continues to grow, the development of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure can become a strategic component of the country’s transition toward cleaner, more efficient and sustainable transportation.

Cameroon’s climate ambitions provide a strong foundation for this transformation. The country’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution targets a reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions, with an unconditional reduction target of 12% by 2030 and a higher target conditional on international support. Its climate strategy covers key sectors including energy and transportation.

Yet the EV ecosystem remains at an early stage. Public charging infrastructure is still limited, with existing installations concentrated primarily around major urban centres. This creates both a challenge and a significant opportunity: Cameroon has the possibility to build its EV charging network strategically from the ground up, rather than simply adapting an infrastructure designed for conventional vehicles.

From EV Adoption to EV Infrastructure

The success of electric mobility will depend on more than the availability of electric vehicles. Drivers, businesses, logistics operators and public institutions need confidence that vehicles can be charged conveniently, reliably and safely.

This means developing a national ecosystem combining AC destination charging, DC fast charging, fleet charging, workplace charging and strategically located public charging hubs. Shopping centres, hotels, supermarkets, office complexes, fuel stations, dealerships and transport hubs can all become important nodes in this emerging network.

For Cameroon, the opportunity is even greater because electric mobility can be progressively connected with the country's renewable-energy ambitions. Cameroon already relies heavily on hydropower, while solar energy and other renewable solutions can complement the electricity mix. The IMF notes that Cameroon is targeting an increased share of renewable energy in its electricity mix, alongside improvements in energy efficiency.

BLAUPUNKT EV: Supporting Cameroon’s Green Mobility Ambition

BLAUPUNKT EV sees Cameroon not simply as a market for electric vehicles, but as a potential strategic hub for the development of a modern African charging ecosystem.

Our ambition is to leverage our charging technology, international experience and local partnerships to support Cameroon in building the infrastructure required for sustainable mobility. BLAUPUNKT EV solutions can contribute to residential, commercial and public charging applications, helping create an ecosystem capable of serving private motorists, corporate fleets, logistics operators and public-sector vehicles.

The approach should be collaborative. Government institutions, energy companies, utilities, property developers, automotive distributors, financial institutions and technology providers all have a role to play. Public-private partnerships can accelerate infrastructure deployment while reducing the investment burden on individual stakeholders.

Building a Local EV Ecosystem

BLAUPUNKT EV’s ambition goes beyond installing charging stations. A sustainable EV ecosystem requires technical training, local maintenance capabilities, digital charging management, energy optimisation and the development of qualified local partners.

Cameroon can use the transition toward electric mobility as an opportunity to develop new technical skills and create employment across installation, electrical engineering, software, maintenance and energy management. Strategic charging corridors connecting major cities and economic centres could progressively support long-distance electric mobility.

Ultimately, the transition to electric mobility should be viewed as part of a broader national energy strategy. With the right infrastructure, partnerships and investment framework, Cameroon can transform its abundant clean-energy potential into a modern transportation ecosystem.

BLAUPUNKT EV is ready to contribute to this journey: supporting Cameroon in building reliable charging infrastructure, enabling cleaner mobility and helping turn the country’s green-energy ambitions into practical solutions on the ground.
